Gary awoke with his chest and face on the table. Several men were passed out in their chairs, some on the hard ground. He had a hangover like never before. The rum must’ve been poor quality. Even in his half-drunk, hungover stupor, it gave him an idea. He would request a better rum for a celebration. He stumbled to his Chris-Craft condo and took a nap. Vicki was already gone, doing her daily chores. When she returned, he would go over the plan with her.

Chapter

Eleven

Vicki returned to the Chris-Craft at around noon. Gary had no watch, but the sun was high in the sky, so he guesstimated. By that time, she had already done the work of three men, yet she asked Gary if there was anything she could do for him.

“How often does the crew go out seeking victims or stealing?” asked Gary.

“Depends. They always leave before sunrise or at night and never return to the island during daylight hours.”

“So, it’s possible they could be going on one tonight?”

“Yes, most likely.”

“Who is in charge of arranging the outings?”

“Jedidiah,” said Vicki.

“Not Teach?” asked Gary.

“No, he runs the entire village and delegates who does what. He is bloodthirsty, though, and the most ruthless man in the village. He often accompanies a group when they attack a boat. He loves to murder helpless victims. He believes it’s his birthright.”

“How often do you get to go?”

“Only when they go into Matthew Town or if they need me to break into something, as I mentioned.”

“Great. I’m gonna talk to this Jedidiah and see if I can arrange to get some better rum from Matthew Town. I need you to swipe a smartphone for me. Can you do that?”

“Sure. I can get you one. Or I can buy it.”

“You have money?” asked Gary.

“Yes, I keep all the cash from the robberies of the boats. They only want gold and jewelry. They have no use for cash and don’t even know how it works. Besides, they steal everything and never pay.”

“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me! Where is all this gold they steal?”

“The key is in the bunker, but only Teach has it. I could pick the lock, but I’ll be drawn and quartered if I get caught.”

“Okay, I’m gonna head out and talk to this Jedidiah now and see if I can arrange an outing to Matthew Town. Where does he usually hang out?” asked Gary.

“He’s probably at the public house. He and Calico Jack are thick as thieves,” she said.

“Calico Jack? Never mind,” said Gary, shaking his head.

Gary found his way to the public house and was blown away by its beauty. They had taken an old oceangoing barge, cut out doors and windows, and created a fantastic bar. They accepted no cash, only gold and barter. The place was bustling. You could get anything you wanted there: a card game, a girl, a hot meal, or rum. The same rot gut rum he’d had the night before. Just the sight of it almost made him throw up in his mouth.
